Shatter was a mesmerizing Arkanoid-like game that too few people played. Shadow Complex openly took inspiration from gaming's past and was hugely successful. Infamous snuck up on us and showed us that new game franchises can still deliver. 2009, a year far weaker than most, still had its fair share of greatness.
Sure, wonderful games are released often enough in the wider realm of gaming. Mega Man 9 was the last game announcement to make me feel a comparable jolt of energy, the paralysis that comes with knowing full-well that a masterpiece is quickly approaching.
